Ballylough will be open to the public on 9th and 10th September. Promoting The Savage Dig and opening up the site including the ‘Corn Stooks’. The excess of rain means that the path to the crannog will be unlikely to be accessible this year. Tours at 11:30 and 14:00. Children restricted due to water hazards. Wellie boots may be essential!
Ballylough's HLF project THE SAVAGE DIG welcomes Nina McNeary to our team May 2017.
Nina will be on hand at the festival on the 10th & 11th June 2017, at Ballylough, to talk about THE SAVAGE DIG project. We are in development stage and looking to engage with local schools and groups on a variety of activities.
Please drop in to see her and chat about what your group might like to get involved with.
This exciting stage of THE SAVAGE DIG project will run until the end of May 2017. We submit the round 2 application in June 2017 and hear from HLF whether we will be awarded the main grant towards the 3 year archaeological dig, education and volunteer programme in Sept 2017. IF we are given the award, the next stage will start in Sept 2017 (or as soon after that we can) and run for 3 + years. The main project aims to look into the biodiversity, culture, stories, archaeology and history of the Ballylough site. It includes development of residential accommodation for students & volunteers, using some of the old buildings in the ancient farmyard. The Savage Dig plans to enable access for local schools, students and volunteers, so that they may be part of a valuable piece of research in Irish history. We could not do this without this vital award from HLF. Thank you HLF and all our volunteers to have gotten us thus far. This first development stage will look at many pieces of information to see what work exactly needs to be carried out at the next stage. It will look at feasibility, sustainability (and all that business speak stuff!!) and consider the value of what it can bring to the local community. We will be looking for local involvement. There will be a lot of volunteer work and the project will provide a full time post and 2 part-time posts.
