EHOD 2017 Update

Thank you to George Logan on Sunday for bringing up some wonderful bits and bobs from across the ages.  Lots of people around to brave the weather and see the Castle, and listen to David's tales and the new audio trails from Bernie McGill, Maria McManus and Catriona McLaughlin.  We signed in around 100 visitors.  The Savage Dig exhibition was on display to recruit potential volunteers to the excavations.  Round 2 for HLF funding goes in in December and we shall hear whether we have been successful sometime in March 2018.  The Stones Project launched over the weekend along with presenting the Cloonty Audio Trails.  If you missed those on the day - see the project page for links to the audio files.  Thank you to Big Telly for all their work on that project and all the local farming families who contributed their stories.

HLF backs development stage of The Savage Dig

This exciting stage of THE SAVAGE DIG project will run until the end of May 2017. We submit the round 2 application in June 2017 and hear from HLF whether we will be awarded the main grant towards the 3 year archaeological dig, education and volunteer programme in Sept 2017. IF we are given the award, the next stage will start in Sept 2017 (or as soon after that we can) and run for 3 + years. The main project aims to look into the biodiversity, culture, stories, archaeology and history of the Ballylough site. It includes development of residential accommodation for students & volunteers, using some of the old buildings in the ancient farmyard. The Savage Dig plans to enable access for local schools, students and volunteers, so that they may be part of a valuable piece of research in Irish history. We could not do this without this vital award from HLF. Thank you HLF and all our volunteers to have gotten us thus far. This first development stage will look at many pieces of information to see what work exactly needs to be carried out at the next stage. It will look at feasibility, sustainability (and all that business speak stuff!!) and consider the value of what it can bring to the local community. We will be looking for local involvement. There will be a lot of volunteer work and the project will provide a full time post and 2 part-time posts.

EHOD 2016

Ballylough opened for the weekend to give access to the MacQuillan Castle. Thank you to all the volunteers working that day and to the visitors for coming and seeing what we are doing. Main achievements this year are centered around the walled garden and work on the HLF application for the Savage Dig.
